The definition of semi-formal attire can be somewhat flexible, particularly for women. In general, the term is defined as clothing that is more dressy than everyday or business attire, but not so formal as to include tuxedos or fancy gowns. Semi-formal dress is still considered formal wear, however, and should be approached with this in mind. What type of clothing is appropriate for a semi-formal event also often depends on the event itself; semi-formal attire for a daytime wedding can be different from that worn to an evening business event or a party. For men, semi-formal attire typically means a dark suit and tie, while for women, it can include a cocktail dress or dressy suit.
A dark suit is key to semiformal cocktail attire for men, although a coat and tie is also acceptable attire for most events. When choosing a tie, both straight ties and bow ties are acceptable. A matching belt, shoes and a watch nicely round out a semiformal ensemble.
Semiformal cocktail attire falls between informal and formal while being a little more relaxed than general semiformal wear. For men, this means a nice, dark suit or a coat, and women have the choice of a dress or dressy suit. Semiformal cocktail attire is the perfect dress code for evening events such as parties, dinners and even weddings.
Keep in mind that shoes are an important part of semi-formal attire as well. Men should wear polished dress shoes, while women may choose to wear stylish heels or flats. Accessories should also match the outfit as well. Flip-flops are not appropriate semi-formal attire, but structured sandals may be for summer events. If an invitation is not specific, or if the nature of the event is unusual, there is no shame in calling the event organizer ahead of time, and simply asking what type of dress is appropriate.
